Tervetuloa näyttelyn avajaisiin Lapinlahden elokuvajuhlien aikana 21.8.2026 klo 19–22. Elokuva nähtävissä elokuvajuhlien aikana 21.8. klo 15–18, lauantaina ja sunnuntaina, 22.8–23.8., klo 13–21 Venetsia-talossa, 1.krs.

“Seitsemäs aalto on matka Itämeren pinnan alle – meren rytmiin ja sen hengitykseen. Pinnan alla maailma muuttuu. Valo siivilöityy veden läpi, värit katoavat ja palaavat, aallot ja virtaukset muovaavat maisemaa lakkaamatta. Aika hidastuu, ja tavallinen kokemus paikasta ja etäisyydestä alkaa hälvetä.

Vuonna 2023 saavuin ensimmäisen kerran Utöhön, Suomen eteläisimmälle ympärivuotisesti asutulle saarelle. Saaren karu ulkosaaristo ja alati muuttuva meri sytyttivät suhteeni Itämereen uudelleen. Siellä syntyivät tämän näyttelyn uusimmat kuvat ja ajatus Seitsemäs aalto -elokuvasta.

Pitää osata lukea merta ja kulkea sen rytmissä.
Kun antautuu veden vietäväksi ja aaltojen matkalaiseksi, voi hetkittäin tuntea yhteyden johonkin ikiaikaiseen – sellaiseen, jolle ei löydy sanoja.

Syvällä vedessä voi aistia valaanlaulun värähtelyn. Ei äänenä, vaan muistona jostakin kaukaisesta. Kaipuuna yhteyteen. Tunteena siitä, että kuuluu hetkeksi johonkin itseään suurempaan.

Kaikki näyttelyn kuvat ja Seitsemäs aalto -elokuvan vedenalaiset kohtaukset on kuvattu henkeä pidättäen vapaasukeltaen.

En kuvaa sitä, miltä meri näyttää. Kuvaan sitä, miltä meri tuntuu.”

Jukka Rapo on helsinkiläinen valokuvaaja, mediataiteilija ja vedenalaiskuvaaja. Hän on työskennellyt ammattivalokuvaajana vuodesta 1995 lähtien ja kuvannut Itämerta veden alla vuodesta 1993.

Rapon pitkä kokemus ulottuu kaupallisesta valokuvauksesta dokumentaariseen työskentelyyn sekä taiteellisiin valokuva- ja elokuvaprojekteihin. Uransa aikana hän on kuvannut satoja henkilöjuttuja, reportaaseja ja kansikuvia suomalaisille ja kansainvälisille aikakauslehdille. Toimituksellinen työ on kehittänyt hänen kykyään kohdata ihmiset rauhallisesti ja rakentaa kuvia, joissa yhdistyvät aitous, tarinallisuus ja vahva visuaalinen ilmaisu.

Welcome to the exhibition opening during the Lapinlahti Film Festival on 21 August 2026, from 7–10 PM. The film will be on view during the festival: on 21 August from 3:00–6:00 PM, and on Saturday and Sunday, 22–23 August, from 1:00–9:00 PM, at the Venice Building, 1st floor.

“The Seventh Wave is a journey beneath the surface of the Baltic Sea – into the rhythm of the sea and its breath.

Beneath the surface, the world transforms. Light filters through the water, colours disappear and return, while waves and currents continuously reshape the landscape. Time slows down, and the familiar experience of place and distance begins to dissolve.

In 2023, I arrived on Utö, Finland’s southernmost permanently inhabited island, for the first time. The island’s rugged outer archipelago and ever-changing sea rekindled my relationship with the Baltic Sea. There the newest photographs in this exhibition were created, along with the idea for the film.

One must learn to read the sea and move with its rhythm.
When you surrender to the water and become a traveller of the waves, there are fleeting moments when you feel connected to something ancient—something beyond words.

Deep beneath the surface, you may sense the vibration of whale song. Not as sound, but as the memory of something distant. A longing for connection. A feeling of belonging, if only for a moment, to something greater than yourself.

All photographs in this exhibition, as well as the underwater scenes in The Seventh Wave, were captured while freediving on a single breath.

I do not photograph what the sea looks like. I photograph what the sea feels like.”

Jukka Rapo is a Helsinki-based photographer, media artist and underwater photographer. He has worked as a professional photographer since 1995 and has been photographing the Baltic Sea underwater since 1993.

Rapo’s extensive career spans commercial photography, documentary work, and artistic photography and film projects. Throughout his career, he has photographed hundreds of portraits, feature stories and magazine covers for Finnish and international publications. His editorial work has shaped his ability to approach people with patience and sensitivity, creating images that combine authenticity, storytelling and a strong visual language.
